Following My Heart
During the period between 1990 to 1995 I lived in Johnstown, PA in order to be closer to my girlfriend. She had moved there with her parents and eventually became my wife in 1992. Johnstown is one of those places that was a booming coal and steel town but by the 1990’s most of the jobs were gone. Their unemployment rate was almost 30%. Having a good work ethic and a strong history of steady employment I figured I would have no problem finding a good job but unfortunately that wasn’t the case.
Nothing Is Guaranteed
Over time I had several jobs that were temporary positions but nothing that was guaranteed. I was becoming disappointed that I wasn’t doing well but refused to give up. I began dealing with a local rent-to-own company like most people on lower income to get the things I needed without having to pay cash up front. Every week I asked them if they had any openings and for a long time they didn’t but they did contract me to pass flyers out door to door during the morning hours. At that same time I was working as a dishwasher at a restaurant in the afternoon and then I would work as a dishwasher at a local bar at night. I didn’t own a car at that time so I depended on bus transportation to get me around. When I finished my third job for the day, the buses were not running and in many cases I had to walk 5 miles home at 2 am.
Perseverance and Hard Work Pays Off
After some time the rent-to-own company had an opening and hired me as an account manager at a salary of $325 a week. That was considered really good money for living in Johnstown because my rent was only $250 a month. The moral of my story is that if you work hard and do what it takes to make it, eventually you will succeed. I’ve had many other jobs that were hard including electrician, cleaning and replacing septic tanks and drain fields, semi truck driver, bowling alley mechanic and working in a plastics plant to name a few. That work ethic has not left me and I promise as your congressman I will take that with me to Washington and work hard for you to get things done that will help bring prosperity back to this community.
Thank you and I look forward to your support in November!
